Ballot Measures

Remcho, Johansen & Purcell has been extensively involved in state and local ballot measures, referenda, and recalls. The firm has drafted numerous initiatives and advised numerous ballot measure committees. The firm also has extensive experience in ballot measure litigation, including pre-election and post-election challenges and litigation over the form and content of petitions and ballot arguments. The firm has both defended and challenged ballot measures in state and federal courts.

The firm has represented the California Teachers Association and others on a number of ballot measures relating to education, including opposing two statewide initiatives that would have instituted a private school voucher system in the state of California. The firm has also drafted legislation, including initiatives, regarding school funding, charter schools, and stem cell research. The firm has also been involved in numerous referenda campaigns and several recall efforts.

2003-04:

Proposition 56 (March 2004 Statewide Ballot). The Budget Accountability Act. 

Senate Bill 2, challenge to referendum regarding employee health coverage.

The California Stem Cell Research and Cures Act.

Litigation regarding the 2003 gubernatorial recall, on behalf of Governor Gray Davis.

The Improving Classroom Education Act.

Car Buyers’ Bill of Rights Act.

2002:

Referendum regarding Interim Contract for Waste Disposal (Town of San Anselmo).

Measure W, Orange County ("The Orange County Central Park and Nature Preserve Initiative").
